Having gotten over its tame international launch of the S4, Samsung's American arm resumes its denigration of Apple, suggesting only old folks own an iPhone.

You thought it might be all over?

You thought that Samsung had tired of suggesting Apple was a fading brand for geriatrics?

You may also have thought that the world runs on Cabernet and common sense.

Yes, the Galaxy S4 was launched on a rocket of the beige and the tasteless. But those were just the corporate folks doing their thing.

Now, the American arm of Samsung has returned to its own style. This involves squishing Apple till it's cider.

Here we are at a high school graduation pool party presented by the latest Samsung ad.

The cooler people all have the new Galaxy S4. The slightly less cool people all have iPhones.

The slightly less cool people might loosely be described as parents. (I say "loosely," because parenting just isn't what it used to be, is it?)

As the party rolls on and the soft drinks flow, the iPhone-owning parents begin to realize just how retrograde they are.

Chrome caching to smooth out rough patches in network

"Offline cache mode" lets Google's browser load a saved version of a previously visited Web page. The cached version might be out of date, though.

Google is working on software that will improve Chrome (Windows, Mac) during moments when people lose their network connection by letting the browser load its own stored copy of previously visited Web pages.

Google programmer Randy Smith said yesterday he's added support for "offline cache mode" to Chrome. It's only on the developer version of the browser so far, and it's disabled by default, but the flag to enable it says the feature will let Chrome load Web pages from the browser's local cache if the online version isn't available. That could help when reloading pages or restarting the browser with no network.

If you're interested in the feature and have the Chrome Canary or developer versions -- neither as well tested as Chrome beta or stable, of course -- here are CNET's instructions on how to enable offline cache mode.

Offline usability been a sore spot with browsers for years, and it becomes more prominent as Google tries to persuade people that its browser-based Chrome OS is ready for mainstream use. The Internet is spreading ever farther, but it's by no means everywhere, even when technical issues don't bring it down temporarily.

Smith cautioned that with the feature, people will see out-of-date "stale" information if an old version of a Web page is cached on the computer, and they won't get a warning about it.

And he's looking for feedback about where the idea is a problem.

"I'm most interested in Web sites for which this produces a bad user experience (i.e. ones for which you wish you had gotten the error page instead of the cache data)," Smith said. "I expect for most Web sites some data will be better than no data, but I'd like to know about the corner cases for which that isn't true."

Judging from the discussion about the patch, it seems likely that Google wants to add the feature to Chrome for iOS, too.

Google spokeswoman Lily Lin declined to comment on the work. "As you know, we're always experimenting with new features in Chrome but have nothing to announce at this time," she said.

iPhone 4S owners report dramatic battery drain

Apple's new iPhone 4S is running through its battery at a prodigious rate, according to reports on the company's own support forum.

A long thread dedicated to the problem now has more than 2,300 messages, runs 160 pages and has been accessed more than 160,000 times, all huge numbers for an Apple support discussion.

"I've had the 4S since the launch day, and I've been pretty pleased with battery life," said someone identified as "andyfromsomerville" on the thread early Monday. "Until this weekend. My phone just went from a full charge to empty within <14h standby time and about 95 minutes of light usage."

Others, however, said that the fast-battery-drain issue had been there from the start.

"Seems to lose 1 percent every 3-4 minutes, even when locked/asleep," noted John Goldman on Oct. 15, the day the thread debuted.

The iPhone 4S went on sale in the U.S., the U.K. and five other countries on Oct. 14. Three days later, Apple boasted that it had sold four million of the devices, more than double the number of iPhone 4 smartphones sold in the same span last year.

Although the bulk of the battery complaints pertain to the iPhone 4S, some users have also reported faster exhaustion for older devices -- including the iPhone 4 and iPad -- after updating to iOS 5, the operating system upgrade Apple issued Oct. 12.

As is usual on Apple's support forum -- which Apple representatives monitor but rarely contribute to -- users posed numerous hypotheses about the problem's root, as well as multiple solutions.

Among the possible explanations, users put forward the iPhone 4S' location-monitoring service, the Siri voice control system, the on-by-default diagnostics option -- which sends data to Apple -- and iCloud, Apple's new sync and backup service.

Some customers said that a variety of settings had mitigated, but not solved, the problem, while many more said that changes had had no effect on their phone's battery life.

While users themselves seem unable to pin down the cause, there is no shortage of claims by bloggers that they have found the source: Last week, for instance, the iDownloadBlog claimed that a bug in iOS 5's location service was at fault.

According to Apple, the iPhone 4S' battery should be good for eight hours of talk time, six hours of Internet usage and 200 hours in standby mode. As a comparison, the iPhone 4 was rated at seven hours of talk time, six hours on the Internet and 300 hours in standby.

Apple did not reply to a request for comment about the iPhone 4S battery complaints.
